Carpet FAQ

Are carpet floors difficult to maintain?

Maintaining your carpet floors is easier than you think. Selecting the right vacuum can go a long way to boosting the longevity of your carpets.

What can I do to protect my carpet against stains?

Always treat the affected area as soon as possible. The longer a spill has time to set, the harder it will be to remove the stain. If you need a spot removal solvent, use a product approved by the Carpet and Rug Institute of America. If you notice a change in the carpet color, consult a professional carpet cleaner. If stains remain after cleaning, moisten tufts in the stained area with 3% hydrogen peroxide and let stand for one hour. Blot and repeat until completely clean.

For spilled food, gently gather and remove what solid material you can with something like a dull knife. Add water and blot. Then, using the highest suction function available, vacuum back and forth, working the stain with water as you go until it is completely clean.

How can I keep my carpet looking fresh and new?

Vacuums can come with a rotating brush, a beater bar, or only suction, and you will want to choose your vacuum type according to the kind of carpet you have. Vacuum your carpet regularly to prevent soil from embedding itself in the fibers, and keep traffic and other factors in mind when considering a professional cleaning every 12 to 18 months. Heave furniture dents can be removed by stroking the dented area with the edge of a coin. Use scissors to clip snags and stickers – pulling on them may damage your carpet. If your carpet is burned, clip the tops of the burnt fibers off with curved scissors. You may need to patch or replace sections that are burnt too severely. For extensive water damage, consult a professional to dry your carpet from top to bottom.
